For this residential garden in Ealing, W5 we used a Burgundy, pink & white planting scheme with bright green/yellow foliage in the sunny border. This satisfied the client’s desire for a bright and colourful garden, whilst keeping things stylish and coherent. The garden will flower from spring, right through to late summer.
Sunny Border
Iris ‘Benton Caramel’
Flowering: May, June
The highlight I think of this planting scheme are these magnificently tall and elegant bearded iris’ that was bred by renowned artist and plantsman Sir Cedric Morris during his time at ‘Benton End’ in Suffolk in the mid 20th century. Sir Cedric Morris raised thousands of iris seedlings but only the best were named and released. Selected for vigour and form with his artist’s eye, Benton irises make an exquisite addition to the garden.

David Austin English Shrub Rose: Gabriel Oak
Flowering: Late Spring to early Winter
A magnificent variety, bearing large, many petalled rosette blooms. The beauty of the blooms is enhanced by a wonderful, strong fruity fragrance. A vigorous rose; it forms a very shapely, broad, rounded shrub with mulberry purple stems and dark green foliage, giving the overall impression of richness and abundance.

Astrantia major ‘Ruby Wedding’
Flowering: June, July, August
Throughout summer ‘Ruby Wedding’ will produce an abundance of ruby-red pincushion-like flowerheads, each with a white flush at the base of each petal. The deeply lobed and mid green leaves are pretty too, forming a loose clump that brings textural interest to mixed planting schemes.

Sanguisorba ‘Tanna’
Flowering: June, July, August, September
Small, plum-coloured, button-like flowers top wiry, upright stems, and seem to hover above the neat mounds of blue-green, pinnate foliage. This cultivar is more tolerant of drier conditions, so is particularly well-suited to mixed or herbaceous borders.

Euphorbia cornigera
Flowering: May, June, July, August
Handsome for weeks in midsummer. New foliage emerges with hints of red. From this arises close-packed small heads of vivid yellow-green flowers set off by conspicuously white-veined leaves. Side branches appear and more flowers until a large loose head is formed. The bright yellow flowers and foliage of this plant provide a striking contrast against the pink and burgundy flowers.

Hakonechloa macra
A slow spreading, deciduous grass which builds into gently cascading hummocks of bright green that are useful as a simple understorey to light shrubs and as a soft edging to paths or steps. Fine, light sprays of lime green flowers appear during June and July, giving a billowing lightness to planted drifts. Again, provides a great contrast against the bright pink and burgundy flowers.

Geranium sanguineum ‘Album’
This pretty cranesbill is smothered with pure white, cup shaped flowers from May though to June. Thriving in full sun or partial shade, it quickly forms loose hummocks of deeply cut, dark green leaves, which is valuable for suppressing weeds.
